Students at Canyon Creek Middle School have just begun rehearsals for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: The Headless Horseman,” a radio play based on the story by Washington Irving.
Student participants gain valuable job-readiness skills, practice creativity, and build community while working toward a common goal. The radio play will be available for free listening on the Washougal School District website on Oct. 28, 29 and 30.
The production is presented by Soundstage, a Club 8 after school program.

“Rehearsals are underway and we’re looking forward to presenting this radio play just in time for Halloween,” said Diana Larson, director of Soundstage at Canyon Creek Middle School. “It is amazing to see these students grow in theatrical skills and in confidence. I’m so proud of them.”
Soundstage is supported by local levies and the Washougal Schools Foundation.
“Thank you all who support our levies, for that is how we bring to our students these opportunities to enrich themselves with the arts, creativity, innovation, and critical thinking,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Templeton. Canyon Creek Middle School students gain job-readiness skills after school at Soundstage.

“I think that public speaking is an important skill to learn because you need to know how to get in front of people for job interviews and presentations in the future,” said Catherine Young, eighth grade student in Soundstage Club 8.
“I’ve gained more self confidence with Soundstage,” said Ben Termini, student at Jemtegaard Middle School.
Termini travels from Jemtegaard Middle School to Canyon Creek Middle School to join the Soundstage team after school. “This is my second year participating in the club. I’ve gained more self confidence with Soundstage.”
Soundstage Club 8 is a productive, positive use of student time. Extracurriculars offer students opportunities to grow academically and socially while fostering a culture of investing in our community. Washougal School District knows, nurtures, and challenges all students to rise.
