Clark County high school basketball fans will have to hit the road next weekend if they want to follow their teams in the state’s Opening Round matchups.
Clark County (and Woodland) has 16 boys and girls teams in their respective state tournaments, and only three will be playing in Southwest Washington for the Opening Round, or what is also referred to as state regionals. And none of those games will be played in Clark County.
One team will play a home play-in game, but that team will be on the road for the Opening Round, as well.
While having already clinched a state tournament berth, the Camas boys basketball team missed out on playing in Southwest Washington for the Opening Round when the Papermakers lost to Auburn in the bi-district championship game Saturday. Camas ended up with the 5-seed in the Class 4A tournament. Auburn earned the 2-seed for state. The top four seeds get Opening Round games in their region.
In Class 4A girls, the defending state champions also lost in the bi-district championship game. It was unlikely the Papermakers were going to get a top-four seed, anyway. They ended up with a 7-seed. Meanwhile, Union, the 4A GSHL champion, earned the 5-seed. It is very possible that Union’s loss in the bi-district semifinals cost the Titans a game in the region.

For years, Battle Ground has been a site for Opening Round games. But without a lot of games featuring District 4 (Southwest Washington) teams, organizers opted for Mark Morris in Longview as the featured site this season.
Three games featuring Clark County or Woodland teams will be playing at Mark Morris High School.
Woodland is the 9-seed in Class 2A girls. The Beavers will play No. 16 Sultan at 2 p.m. Saturday in Longview.
The Mountain View girls earned an 11-seed in Class 3A. The Thunder will play the winner of the 19-14 play-in game. The 3A state tournament has 20 teams. Mountain View’s game will be at noon Saturday.
And the Columbia River boys are the 11-seed in Class 2A and will take on No. 14 Renton. That game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.
In Class 1B boys, Columbia Adventist will get a true home game as the 16-seed against No. 17 Sound Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday The winner advances to the Opening Round, on the road.
All other teams from Clark County will be on the road.
A reminder, though, that even if on the road, there is a huge benefit to the teams seeded 5 through 8. Those teams are still going to the Tacoma Dome or Yakima Valley SunDome. The top-eight teams play each other in the Opening Round to determine placement in the domes. The winners go directly to the state quarterfinals. The losers begin play a day at the dome earlier in the round-of-12 games.
