Two state champions will be in Clark County this week.
They will be joined by 34 other baseball teams for what is being described as the largest high school baseball tournament in the Northwest.
Clark County Baseball presents the Baseballism Kickoff Classic.
Oh, and it’s free. Seriously. No ticket required.
There is an eight-team tournament that begins with two games Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex.
Then there are seven four-team tournaments at various high schools throughout the region that begin Friday and conclude Saturday.
If you want to watch high school baseball, there are plenty of options.
“It’s a labor of love, and it’s an opportunity for our local programs to get showcased,” said Jason Castro, organizer.
This is the fourth year of hosting a baseball event, but the second year of what has become an event of such magnitude.
In all, 11 Clark County baseball teams will be playing, along with 25 other teams from throughout the Northwest. That would include defending Class 4A state champion Lake Washington and defending Class 3A state champion Mount Vernon.
The different brackets are named after professional baseball players who got their start in Southwest Washington.
Camas and the Papermakers are hosting the Taylor Williams bracket on Friday and Saturday.
The Evergreen Plainsmen are hosting the Brian Hunter bracket.
The Heritage Timberwolves are hosting the Randy Myers bracket. Heritage is also home to the Stan Spencer bracket.
The Ian Hamilton bracket is at Mountain View High School. So, too, is the Robert Ramsay bracket.
Union High School will host the Alan Embree bracket.
Then there is the eight-team event at the RORC named for Richie Sexson.
The games are played on turf fields, which help in case of inclement weather.
