A big-time football program has announced a big-name coach.
Adam Mathieson, who coached Mountain View for 15 seasons before joining Camas’ staff as an assistant coach this past year, is the new head coach for the Camas Papermakers.
“My family and I are extremely humbled to be provided with the opportunity to lead the Papermaker football program,” Mathieson said in a press release that was provided by the school’s athletic director, Stephen Baranowski.
“It is obviously a program rich in tradition, in a community that passionately supports its students and athletes,” Mathieson said.
He noted the past accomplishments from Bob Holman, who took over a struggling program and turned it into a winner, with Camas earning its first league championship in 36 years in 2005. Jon Eagle then took the Camas program to new heights, with two state championships and multiple final four appearances, and most recently, Jack Hathaway maintaining the winning ways with three consecutive league titles.
Hathaway resigned earlier in January.
Mathieson said beyond their success as coaches, they each represented the program in a “first-class manner” as they and their staff developed winners on and off the field.
“Moving forward, our objective will be no different as we work to build another layer on the foundation that has been built by the many coaches and players that came before us,” the new coach said.
Mathieson joined the Camas staff last summer after resigning from Mountain View. He is an athletic coordinator at Camas.
Mathieson left the Thunder after budget cuts within Evergreen Public Schools led to no full-time job for him at Mountain View. He said he did not want to coach at a school he was not working at during the day.
Mathieson won 99 games in his 15 seasons at Mountain View, qualifying for the playoffs in nine of 14 possible seasons. (The abbreviated season in COVID did not have a postseason.) His Thunder team reached the Class 3A state semifinals in 2018. His squads won five league championships.
Mathieson’s “To The Top” philosophy guided the football team at Mountain View, focusing on character development. It was so successful within the football program that the entire school adopted the philosophy for all of its students.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring in someone of Adam’s caliber and character to lead our program” Baranowski said. “Adam is someone who will establish strong relationships with our players and families, be a mentor to his athletes, and bring a breadth of experience and knowledge to our coaching staff.
“In finding our next head coach, we wanted someone who would be a kid magnet and positive force for our program, while also being someone who would challenge our players to reach new heights,” he added. “We feel we are checking all of those boxes in selecting Adam as our next coach.”
