Rethinking the future of the Interstate Bridges
A new opinion column from Rep. John Ley questions whether the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program should continue pursuing demolition of the existing Interstate Bridges as project costs continue to climb. Ley argues that with bridge removal now estimated at nearly $400 million, state leaders should consider whether upgrading and repurposing the existing structures could provide a more affordable alternative while preserving capacity across the Columbia River. He points to past studies suggesting seismic upgrades may be feasible and contends that billions of dollars could be redirected to other transportation needs throughout Washington and Oregon. We want to know what you think: Would you support upgrading and reusing the existing Interstate Bridges if it saved billions of dollars?
