Police guild warns directive could increase crime

Vancouver police officers have been directed to stop making arrests or issuing citations for several misdemeanors, including shoplifting, public drug use and trespassing, because of public-defense caseload limits and city budget constraints. Police guild President Jeff Anaya says the policy will harm businesses, reduce public safety and limit opportunities to connect people with drug treatment, while the city says available resources must be prioritized.
