Camas resident Anna Miller offers her support to protect the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance at County Council meetings

Wil Fuentes, newly seated County Council member, didn’t take long to reveal who he is. Fuentes, a first-generation immigrant from El Salvador, wants the long-standing tradition of prayer to be removed from County Council meetings. He wants God out. Fuentes later added that he believed the councilors should also consider removing the Pledge of Allegiance. That’s right. The pledge that we say to honor our country, and every sacrifice made for freedom going back to our founding fathers.
Mr. Fuentes are you familiar with these words “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their “creator” with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness-that to secure these Rights, Government are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the Governed”? You may not sir, but most Americans cherish these words.
Put your foot back in your mouth, take a class on the Declaration of Independence and get to work on the business of the people. Also, turn around and look at the American Motto on the wall behind you. In God We Trust.

In January 1776, Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense, which described the uphill battle against the British for independence as a challenging but achievable and necessary objective, was published in Philadelphia. In Common Sense, Paine wrote the famed phrase:
“These are the times that try men’s souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
Thank you, Anna, for this well written letter! You said it well. Hopefully Counselor Fuentes will focus on the important business of being on the County Council. There is so much to learn and accomplish for the citizens.
So concisely stated. It would be interesting to know who advised Council Member Fuentes to make such a disastrous move on Day 1.
Good judgement may be the most important thing a servant of the people needs. Next is common sense.
Coming to a country that has fought and died for their freedoms and the freedoms of other countries and requests the changes mr fuentes request is more than disrespectful. I would hope you come to understand these values are what made possible this country and your ability to come here . We welcome you , please do the same .
