Clark County’s scenic venue to once again host Military Appreciation Race on July 19
The densely wooded surroundings of the quaint Washougal River will once again roar to life this summer as the globally prestigious Pro Motocross Championship makes its annual visit to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday, July 19, for the 44th edition of the FLY Racing Washougal National. The longest running professional motorsports event in the Pacific Northwest has been thrilling audiences across Washington, Oregon, and even Idaho since 1980, where the star of the show for more than four decades has been the iconic track layout at Clark County’s Washougal MX Park. This year’s event will carry extra significance as the series’ Military Appreciation Race, a celebration of both veteran and active-duty service members, in recognition of the sacrifices they’ve made in defense of our country and ensuring the freedoms of all Americans.

Nestled amidst a sea of evergreen trees, one would be hard pressed to find a more scenic locale for a world class motocross track, but the hidden gem that is Washougal MX Park is just as notorious as it is beautiful. Navigating the circuit, with its numerous uphill and down descents, none more renowned than the high speed “Horsepower Hill,” is a challenge unto itself, but a continuous traverse through the tree-line layout shoots racers in and out of the shadows, placing an added emphasis on vision as athlete’s eyes must adjust to the rapid changes in lighting. Adding another challenging layer to the track is its clay racing surface, which has a tendency to get slick as the day goes on and requires competitors to be vigilant with their throttle control. It all combines to create a beautiful, yet daunting endeavor for the fastest and most talented two-wheeled athletes on the planet.
For spectators, there’s simply nothing like it, as they can get mere feet from the racetrack and cheer on the riders as they fly by, both literally and figuratively. With so many unique places to watch, virtually every vantage point provides spectacular visuals and puts fans on top of the action.
The Pro Motocross Championship comprises 11 rounds of competition amongst the most high profile superstars of motorcycle racing, like American-born champions Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton, as well as championship-winning Australian phenom Jett Lawrence, Spaniard world champion Jorge Prado, and many more. The series will visit 10 different states from late May to late August, visiting the most hallowed venues in racing with legacies that span upwards of five decades. In the end, a pair of athletes will emerge with the sport’s most distinguished title, celebrated as an AMA National Champion.
Giving Pacific Northwesterners an added incentive to cheer on the athletes is Washougal’s own Levi Kitchen, a budding star who races for Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki, the most successful and winningest race team in the history of the sport with more than 300 victories to its name. Kitchen has logged more laps than any other rider at Washougal, but he’ll agree that isn’t necessarily a guarantee for success as the track presents one of the most unique challenges in the sport. In two starts at his home race, Kitchen is still in search of his first podium at the track and will be one of the favorites to challenge for victory.
