The city of Vancouver recently cleared long-standing homeless camps near Andresen Road under an emergency order citing environmental and public health concerns

Homeless camps along the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail near Andresen Road — long a source of concern for nearby residents — have now been cleared following a city-issued emergency order. The City of Vancouver cited public health, safety, and environmental risks as justification for permanently closing the area to camping. With similar actions taking place elsewhere, this week’s poll asks whether cities should have the authority to enact such closures under emergency powers.

The way to stop illicit public camping is to stop allowing illicit public camping. All the City is doing is moving the same people around while spending millions of tax dollars to accomplish very little.

There is nothing compassionate about allowing people to squat in their own filth on public property and refuse any offer of assistance to change their own situation.

This not an emergency, it’s a willful lack of enforcement of laws, codes and social order. We’ve all had to live with the consequences for years.
