Washougal resident Mark Haller shares his strategy for the Nov. 8 general election

As we come to our 2022 mid-term election, we are facing vexing challenges – COVID, illegal immigration, homelessness, inflation, war, etc. Underpinning it all, many of our politicians and one of our political parties purposefully foment anger, fear, and divisiveness in pursuit of getting re-elected.
I am a resolute believer in the benefits two strong political parties bring to America’s democracy. At this time, however, our country needs us to be courageous, telling our representative politicians, “no more Us vs Them, ours is a WE nation.”
To show the Republican party that election denial and extreme candidates are unelectable, bravely vote for Democrats. They won’t destroy the country, and in a couple of years, we have the chance to vote them out. In the meantime, we’ll show both parties that extreme candidates are unacceptable and hopefully force the nomination of more moderate candidates in the future.

Mark Haller I uderstand what youre saying, but would like everyone, to consider the idea, that since history began in America, ALL organizations which pretend to protect people, (AFLCIO, Anti-Defamation League, Democrats, Republicans) were actually created under false pretenses, to actually separate people, and too pit people against one another, not bring them together!

Are you serious???? What world are you living in? Have you looked recently at the prices of gas and food, or at the condition of your 401k? And you want to still vote for the dumbocrats?
YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. You actually want to continue to vote for more of the same? Remember, insanity is defined as doing the same thing again and again, yet expecting a different outcome.
The dumbocrats had their chance(s); it’s time for something different…. whether it be on the local or state or national level.
Susan: Today gas was $4.14 at Costco. Inflation is global, not the fault of one party or the other. It’s also cyclical: 1946,1950,1969,1973,1989 and 2008 all had inflation rates greater than 5%. Price gouging by Big Oil and Big Pharma and Wall Street all contribute if you want to point a finger. As a proud “dumbocrat”, I prefer to vote for the party that actually does something for the greater good. For EVERYONE — I don’t believe we accomplish this by name calling, we don’t do it by taking away a woman’s rights. Any progressive changes in this country from Social Security to Civil Rights have been under Democratic administrations. I understand wanting something different however it shouldn’t include destroying the very fabric of our democracy.
You can’t reason with people that resort to name calling and you shouldn’t try. I doubt she even has a 401k–she’s just throwing spaghetti out there.
I think arguing that all good things have happened under democratic administrations is wrong though. Abe Lincoln (Republican), the Nixon administration passed some of the most important environmental laws in our nations’ history (the EPA was created during his admin)–I could go on but don’t feel the need. The problem with the Republican party today is that it is been hi-jacked by people that put the Trump flag over the American flag, a person over principle, bravado over basic decency and conspiracy over fact. I still believe in the basic Republican platform centered around limited government, personal responsibility and the rule of law, but today’s Republican party is all about self-interest and loyalty to a person undeserving of it.

I’m late to your comment John but I so appreciate your reply about the global inflation & it being cyclical, etc. Coffee’s on me! But save your reasoning for those that can disagree w/o being disagreeable. And she says “you are part of the problem” – isn’t she SPECIAL?
This is one of the most convoluted letters I have read in a while. First you want us all to hold hands and skip merrily off the cliff together. No more “us vs them”! But wait, there’s more. Then your strategy seems to be to let the Democrats have a free for all for a couple years and then kick THEM out. That will show them. Problem is, the Democrats have already had their free for all, and done a boat load of damage already. So, I agree…then vote them out as you say. But don’t wait another two years. Do it NOW.
