Vancouver Police investigate attempted kidnapping

Vancouver resident with a prior kidnapping conviction attempted to kidnap a 14-year-old at a store in Vancouver Mall

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Police Department is investigating an attempted kidnapping which occurred at the Vancouver Mall Saturday (Sept. 21).

Steven Hayes is a 49-year-old Vancouver resident with a prior conviction for kidnapping. On Saturday, Hayes approached a 14-year-old victim at a store in the mall. Hayes grabbed the victim, threatened to kill them and attempted to drag them from the premises.

The victim fought back and Hayes fled. Hayes was chased and apprehended by good Samaritans prior to police arriving. The victim was not injured during this incident. 

Hayes was booked into the Clark County Jail for Kidnapping I, Assault II and Felony Harassment.
