🎧 Rep. John Ley Files for Re-Election in WA District 18

Rep. Ley has been a vocal opponent of the Interstate 5 Bridge Replacement Program, criticizing its escalating costs, lack of transparency, and inclusion of unnecessary elements like light rail

VANCOUVER – This past week, State Representative John Ley (R-18th District, Position 2) officially announced his filing for re-election, committing to continue his strong advocacy for fiscal responsibility, government accountability, and practical solutions that serve the residents of Southwest Washington.

“It has been an honor to serve the people of the 18th District. I am proud to file for re-election and build on the momentum we’ve created,” said Rep. Ley. “From the outrageous I-5 Bridge Replacement boondoggle to the new state income tax and delays in critical mental health infrastructure, Olympia’s out-of-touch policies are hurting working families. I will keep fighting for you and continue to provide common-sense leadership for our communities.”

Rep. Ley has been a vocal opponent of the Interstate 5 Bridge Replacement Program, criticizing its escalating costs, lack of transparency, and inclusion of unnecessary elements like light rail. “The people oppose tolling and light rail, and the proposal fails to address core congestion and freight mobility needs,” Ley noted. He continues to push for greater accountability, alternative bridge corridors, and solutions that prioritize the public’s real concerns over wasteful government spending.

He has strongly opposed the new Washington Income Tax (a 9.9% tax on earnings over $1 million), which he argues sets a dangerous precedent. It will ultimately harm economic growth and affordability for all residents. Ley remains committed to comprehensive tax relief and fighting against further tax increases on hardworking families.

He fought against the theft of $4 billion from the LEOFF1 pension plan. “If this is allowed to stand, I fear for the remaining government worker pension plans,” Ley said. The Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) manages retirement trust fund assets totaling approximately $218 billion. These assets support eight state-administered retirement systems, encompassing 15 different plans and must be protected.

Additionally, Rep. Ley has been a leading advocate for opening the Brockmann Residential Treatment Facility in Vancouver through public-private partnerships. This much-needed mental health resource would provide critical beds and services to address the state’s mental health crisis, create jobs, and ease pressure on overcrowded facilities. He has been working with NAMI SW and other community members to get this open and serving our community.

A statement from Ley’s campaign characterized him as “a proven conservative leader with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest. Rep. Ley focuses on key priorities including reigning in unsustainable state spending, improving public safety, supporting law enforcement, enhancing education, and fostering a pro-business environment that creates jobs. He is dedicated to delivering value for taxpayers and restoring local control where it matters most.’’
