“We are proud to ensure pets throughout our community are fed,” says Stacey Graham, president of HSSW. “Pets are so important to our region’s vulnerable populations, and Chow Now is one of our many community outreach programs that nourishes this loving bond.”

The pet food collected over the last two weeks of December will go to the Animeals program, Clark County Food Bank, a number of senior centers, and to shelter animals at HSSW.

HSSW has a long history of supplying pet food to Animeals, which sorts, bags and delivers the product to three Meals-on-Wheels distribution sites in Southwest Washington. A perfect companion to the Meals-on-Wheels deliveries, the bags of pet food are provided along with the human-food meals for seniors. The Animeals program is vital to keep seniors from sharing their own food with their pets when pet food isn’t available.

In collaboration with Clark County Food Bank, HSSW distributes 15 tons of pet food each year, which is distributed through area food pantries. Shelter animals at HSSW consume more than 80,000 pounds of pet food annually. In addition to Chow Now, pet food donations for the shelter are accepted year round.

In 2017, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) sheltered more than 8,000 animals offering adoption services, Safe Haven temporary housing, low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, and medical care. HSSW facilitated more than 5,000 adoptions in 2017 alone with 25 percent of all adoptions coming from the Portland area. In addition, HSSW distributes 15,000 pounds of pet food each year in collaboration with Clark County Food Bank.

HSSW is a proud member of the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) along with nine other animal sheltering organizations. More than 1,040 volunteers work with HSSW animals, and provide laundry services, assistance in the clinic, ReTails Thrift Store support, event assistance and outreach activities. ReTails Thrift Store is owned and operated by HSSW and recently was named the “Best Thrift Store” in Clark County by The Columbian poll. Likewise, HSSW was named the “Best Nonprofit” in Clark County for 2017.
