At least 10 Christian churches in the Camas-Washougal area have committed to cancelling an upcoming Sunday morning service, to meet together in an event they call “One Church for Jesus.”
This public gathering will take place on Sunday, September 7, at 10 a.m., at the Doc Harris Football Stadium, 841 NE 22nd Avenue in Camas.
For several years, a group of area ministers has been meeting weekly in Camas to pray for each other, pray for their churches, and pray for the Camas-Washougal community. Praying together has led to mutual friendship and trust, which are the basis for this upcoming event.
Their purposes are corporate worship, prayer, fellowship and Christian unity. One pastor commented, “For pastors to give up a Sunday service at their church is a real sacrifice. That just shows how significant this gathering will be.”
While each participating church has distinctive beliefs, they all share a common faith in Jesus. “One Church for Jesus” is not an attempt to organize into one church, or to pretend that differences do not exist. “One Church for Jesus” will celebrate what all Christians everywhere believe, and the diversity that makes each church and denomination distinct.
“One Church for Jesus” will include congregational singing led by a band from several churches, brief messages from five local pastors, and prayer for Camas and Washougal. Special prayers will be offered for the school districts, schools, staff and students in the area. There will be some activities for children.
After the 90-minute service, attendees will be encouraged to stay and get to know folks from other local churches.
The group’s website states, “Regardless of denomination, we’re gathering as one body to lift up the name of Jesus and declare his hope over our cities. Come early, bring your friends and family, and stay after for fellowship!”
