Zohran Mamdani sat at George Washington’s desk and made a mockery of the country and its citizens, including the immigrants he thought he was advocating for.

He’s been a citizen all of eight years but thinks he has the U.S. all figured out: freedom is only available to those with wealth and the right skin color. It’s an insult to the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who made their way here, embraced the country and its opportunities, and assimilated into the American way of life, making their lives, and our country, better for it.

I should know. My father and his mother came to this country from Mexico when he was just 6-years-old. There was no welfare, no Medicaid, no ESL classes. They sold corn on the street trying to survive, but my father seized the freedom and opportunity of living here and went to work in a grocery store as a teen.

At 24, my parents bought their first of three restaurants, a business that had bankrupted the previous two owners. He added delivery service and turned the business around. He later invented a medical device, which was patented in over 30 countries. Over the years my parents employed hundreds of people and were involved in charity work.

It’s the kind of story that’s been repeated through generations of American history, but as with most things American, Mamdani and his Communist friends don’t respect it. They want immigrants to think they can’t make it on their own and need the government to take care of them indefinitely.

Doing so, of course, requires seizing the money of those who’ve risked their own savings and/or mortgaged their house, then put in crazy hours and their own blood, sweat, and tears to create a business that provides jobs to others. Mamdani took a dig at Elon Musk, while conspicuously leaving out the great good Musk and his inventions have provided.

Then he said, “We are told that America is exceptional because we are richer, stronger, more powerful than anyone else.” No. We’re exceptional because we are free; because we were the first country to recognize that our rights come from God, not from government. We’re exceptional because, though not perfect, we strive to do better, to create a “more perfect union.” No country has done more to lift up its own citizens while helping others around the world. And no country employing Mamdani’s wish list has ever been anything other than a dystopia of oppression and human misery.

Mamdani is what Ronald Reagan warned us about: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It has to be fought for and defended by each generation.”

It’s time to get fighting.
