Camas begins search for interim mayor

Interim mayor will serve until results of November election certified

The city of Camas has begun its search for an interim mayor, following the unexpected resignation of Mayor Barry McDonnell in May. The City Council expects to hold a Special Meeting July 26 to conduct candidate interviews followed by an Executive Session, followed by a public vote by council members.

The interim mayor will take the oath of office at the next regular meeting of the City Council and serve until the November election results are certified.

Interested individuals have until noon July 16 to submit their application. The position pays a monthly stipend of $2,501, plus an allowance for mileage, phone and technology. Details can be found here.

The city of Camas operates under a Council-Mayor form of government. The mayor is the chief executive of the city. The city of Camas has a city administrator to carry out the day-to-day administration of the city through the delegation or direction of the mayor.

The mayor presides over all meetings of the City Council, when present, but only votes in the case of a tie in the votes of the council members with respect to matters other than the passage of any ordinance, grant, or revocation of franchise or license, or any resolution for the payment of money. The mayor reports to the council concerning the affairs of the city and its financial and other needs, and makes recommendations for council consideration and action.

To be eligible to be appointed to interim mayor, you:

• Must have continuously resided within the Camas city limits for a minimum of 1-year prior to appointment.

• Must be a registered voter in the city of Camas

The city is dealing with an additional challenge. City Administrator Jamal Fox announced his resignation to take a job in Maryland. His final day in Camas is July 9. The members of the City Council announced at their most recent meeting they will undertake a process to hire an interim city administrator soon. Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Burton said she hopes to find someone who has experience as a city administrator who can fill the job during a period of transition.
