Clark County basketball teams struggled in the opening night of the state basketball tournaments.
Across the state Friday, there were six games featuring Clark County teams. The Clark County teams went 0-6.
Fortunately for three of those teams, they were in seeding games and had already qualified for the round of 12 in a dome. The Union girls and the Camas girls will play next week in the Tacoma Dome in the 4A tournament, and the Columbia River girls will play next week in the Yakima Valley SunDome in the 2A tournament.
Three other teams, however, saw their seasons come to an end — the Ridgefield girls, the Fort Vancouver boys, and the King’s Way Christian girls.
Nine more teams from Clark County (and Woodland) play Saturday. The Camas boys, and the Seton Catholic boys and girls teams are playing in seeding games and are assured of playing next week. Six other teams (see below) play elimination games Saturday and must win to advance.
Friday’s results
Seeding games
4A girls: Woodinville 70, Union 66. The Titans, the No. 5 seed, just missed against the 4-seed. Union will play the winner of Glacier Peak-Emerald Ridge in the Tacoma Dome at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The winner of that game will advance to the state quarterfinals.
4A girls: Lake Washington 65, Camas 49. The Papermakers, the 7-seed, will still get a chance to defend their state championship in the dome. Only this year, instead of advancing directly to the quarterfinals, the Papermakers will be in the round-of-12 against the winner of Lake Stevens-Issquah. That game will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The winner of that game goes to the quarterfinals.
2A girls: Ellensburg 78, Columbia River 28. The Rapids, the 7-seed, struggled all night against the No. 2 seed. Columbia River will play the winner of Cedarcrest-Port Angeles at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at the Yakima Valley SunDome. The winner of that game goes to the quarterfinals.
Elimination games
2A girls: Eatonville 55, Ridgefield 51. The Spudders, the 14-seed, had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but the 3-pointer missed. Ridgefield’s season came to an end. Still, an impressive rebound for the Spudders, who started the season 1-9, then went on a roll to advance to state.
1A boys: Bellevue Christian 61, Fort Vancouver 48. The Trappers, the 13-seed, weren’t able to rally against the 12-seed Friday night, ending their season. This was Fort Vancouver’s first trip to the state tournament since 1990.
1A girls: Wapato 56, King’s Way Christian 45. The Knights, the 14-seed, led after the first quarter, but then No. 11 Wapato got it going and advanced. King’s Way Christian’s season came to an end, but not until making it to state for the second time in program history.
