Baseball: Curt Daniels Invitational starts Wednesday

The six-day tournament opens at Propstra Stadium

If it’s Independence Day week, it must be time for the Curt Daniels Invitational Baseball Tournament.

The annual event, which brings together a dozen baseball teams featuring high school age players from throughout the Northwest, begins Wednesday and lasts through Monday.

“It’s always fun to get a lot of the top players around and honor Curt,” said Ben McGrew, the tournament director.

It is important, he said, that today’s players understand the legacy of Daniels with the game of baseball in the area. Daniels was the head coach at Columbia River and Hudson’s Bay, as well as a scout for the Chicago White Sox. He was instrumental in youth baseball all over the Northwest.

Daniels died in 2003 after a battle with cancer.

The field at Propstra Stadium is named Daniels Field for Curt and his father, Al.

A special guest will start this year’s Curt Daniels Invitational at Propstra Stadium. Curt’s mother, 93-year-old Barb Daniels, will throw out the first pitch before the 12:30 p.m. game, the Vancouver Cardinals vs. the Portland Baseball Club.

The Vancouver Mavericks will take on Gunderson Baseball at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The tournament will move to Concordia University in Portland and Columbia River High School for Thursday’s games. (Propstra is unavailable Thursday due to nearby Fourth of July celebrations.)

From Friday through Sunday, there will be games all day at Propstra Stadium and Concordia University.

Championship Monday will bring the semifinals and the finals to Propstra Stadium.

Cost is $5 per day. Fans can watch as many games as they want, per day, at that price.
