First of four performances of a play based on the true story of women in a dangerous workplace in the 1920s is set for May 9, presented by Starbird Theatre of Vancouver
A local theater company is set to present “These Shining Lives” for four performances in Vancouver.
From playwright Melanie Marnich, the play is based on the true story of the women who worked at the Radium Dial Company in the 1920s, painting watch dials with radium-based paint. The women took pride in their world, but soon developed severe health issues from the toxic exposure.
The play explores themes of resilience, friendship, and the fight against corporate negligence. It highlights the human cost of industrial progress and the courage of those who fought for workers’ rights and justice.
“Their fight is not just part of history; it’s a reminder that no matter how daunting the battle, there is always something worth advocating for,” said Christyn LaChaine, the director. “I can’t wait to bring this tragically inspiring narrative to life, and I believe it will touch audiences as profoundly as it has touched me.”
“These Shining Lives” will open at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 9th at the TJMS Theatre, 3000 NW 119th Street in Vancouver.
There are three more performances that weekend: 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11.
Tickets are $20 advance online, or $22 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at: https://starbird-website.vercel.app/
