
Bill Black posted a video shortly after incident took place Tuesday in Hazel Dell
The victim of an attempted carjacking who was able to fight off a suspect Tuesday in Hazel Dell has identified himself in a video on social media.
Vancouver resident Bill Black posted a video account of the incident on his Facebook page Tuesday afternoon shortly after the attempted carjacking took place at the AMPM gas station located at 609 NE 99th Street in Hazel Dell. According to information provided by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the incident took place at 11:44 a.m. and Black’s video was posted four minutes later.
Black, who said he lives nearby the site of the incident, was attempting to put air in one of his vehicle’s tires. According to a CCSO report, the suspect walked from the area of the 99th Street Transit Center, located at 9700 NE 7th Avenue, to the AMPM. The suspect, a white male dressed in a black hooded shirt and black face mask, stood in close proximity to the air pump as Black was adding air to his vehicle’s tires. When the victim moved around to the passenger side of the vehicle, the suspect jumped into the driver seat and began backing the vehicle up.
“I guess it was my foolish mistake to think I could put air in one of my tires without someone stealing it,” said Black, speaking with obvious emotion. Black said the suspect “jumped in my car and tried to steal it. Fortunately, I was able to jump in and grabbed him. He almost hit the pumps driving in reverse … I put it in park and he took off running.”
Black, whose Facebook profile indicates he is the CEO and founder at Independent Education Consultant-Real Estate in Vancouver, was seen in the video with scratches on his face from the struggle with the suspect, during which both men struck each other in the face. The suspect reportedly ran off northbound.
Sheriff’s Office deputies set up containment around the area and the Battle Ground K9 Officer responded to conduct a dog track. The suspect was not located.
An obviously frustrated Black also stated in the video, “Every day I get closer to moving out of this (expletive) place.”
