Third Congressional District candidates Joe Kent and Leslie Lewallen each provided a response to Thursday’s guilty verdict of former President Donald Trump by a jury in New York City.
Kent and Lewallen, both Republicans, are attempting to unseat Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Yesterday’s conviction of President Trump in Manhattan was nothing short of a travesty of justice,’’ Kent said. “This unjust decision is a glaring example of the political persecution that is undermining the foundations of our great nation. The radical left is willing to do anything to silence those who stand for truth and American values.
“Marie (Gluesenkamp) Perez, who masquerades as a moderate, has refused to comment on this unjust conviction,’’ Kent added. “Her silence speaks volumes about her complicity and her true allegiance to the radical agenda. This is the same Marie Perez who has consistently voted against measures that would strengthen our borders, support our troops, and defend our freedoms.
“We cannot allow this injustice to stand unchallenged,’’ Kent said. “Our campaign is the frontline in the battle to restore fairness, integrity, and true American values in Congress. I am committed to fighting against the corruption and ensuring that your voice is heard in Washington.’’
Lewallen, a current member of the Camas City Council, issued the following statement Thursday.
“From day one, this trial has been a political witch-hunt carried out by a liberal DA and judge,’’ Lewallen said. “They willingly risked the integrity of our judicial system for political gain, and, in the process, dishonored their offices and the oaths they made when they were sworn in. In my opinion, this verdict does nothing to disqualify President Trump from holding office, and I look forward to casting my ballot for him in November.”
