SUV fire spreads to grass near Highway 14

Fire spread over approximately one acre near highway

A sport utility vehicle caught fire Wednesday evening on the shoulder of Highway 14 and the fire spread into dry grass along the highway.

At 6:50 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 19), three Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) engines and a battalion chief were dispatched for reports of an SUV on fire on Highway 14 west bound under Interstate 205.

First-arriving fire crews arrived and found a red Cadillac Escalade fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to the grass traveling up the north shoulder of Highway 14. The grass fire was reported to be approximately one acre.

A VFD water tender was requested for extra water but it was later recalled after crews on scene were able to extinguish the grass fire with the water that they carried on their fire engines. VFD engines carry 500 gallons of water and are equipped to handle smaller grass fires.

The owner of the vehicle admitted to firefighters on scene that the SUV had known mechanical issues.
