This outdoor competition invites artists to capture the essence of downtown Camas’s tree-lined avenues and boutique storefronts in the open air
As autumn paints the charming streets of Camas, Washington with vibrant hues, the city comes alive with the annual Camas Plein Air Event. This outdoor competition invites artists to capture the essence of downtown Camas’s tree-lined avenues and boutique storefronts in the open air on Saturday, Sept. 27. Participants vie for a share of $2,800 in cash prizes, including a $1,000 first prize.
The competition not only showcases artistic talent but also honors the legacy of Marquita Call, the late founder of the Camas Plein Air event and passionate advocate for the local art community. Throughout the day, visitors can stroll through downtown, observing artists at work and later see the completed pieces displayed at RedDoor Gallery, 411 NE Dallas Street. “This celebration of art and community marks a cherished tradition in Camas’s cultural calendar,” said Liz Pike, an organizer for the event. “With grit and grace, Marquita was a one-woman, non-stop promoter of the arts in our community. As a visionary gallery owner, she successfully launched the careers of numerous artists, offering them their first exhibitions and connecting their work with collectors and curators all over the region,” added Pike.
In 2024, artist Ken Klos was awarded the $1,000 first prize for his depiction of Natalia’s Cafe. Registration is now open to artists. Official plein air rules and registration forms can be found at RedDoorGalleryCamas.com under the Camas Plein Air Event tab. Advance $30 registration by artists is required. Registration ends September 26 or when the limit of 100 artists is reached. To request an official artist entry form, please call or text Liz Pike at (360) 281-8720 or email: pikeadvertising@comcast.net.
