New fire station coming to Orchards area by 2020

Vancouver, Fire District 5 partner for construction of Fire Station 11

VANCOUVER — Vancouver Fire Chief Joe Molina says the creation of a new fire station in the Orchards area of Vancouver near the intersection of NE 117th Avenue and NE 87th Street will improve emergency response capabilities and the reliability of the entire emergency response system.

The announcement of the new station came in the form of a press release from the city of Vancouver on Thursday. The city and Fire District 5 are partnering on the station, which will be known as Fire Station 11.

Design and engineering work will start as soon as next month, with plans for construction to be complete by the fall of 2020.

Fire District 5 is funding the purchase of property as well as the construction of the station. The city has landed a contract with Mackenzie Engineering for design and construction, which will use the recent designs done for Vancouver fire stations 1 and 2 as a template.

“In partnership with the Vancouver Fire Department, we identified the need for a new station and we are proud to participate in the construction of station 11,” said Fire District 5 Board Chair Ron Gibson. “This project embodies the spirit of local collaboration and public interest and is a great opportunity to enhance and improve service delivery among growing neighborhoods within the district.”

Vancouver has provided fire protection services for Fire District 5 for more than two decades. The district includes a 42-mile area north of the Orchards area. The new fire station will be located just outside city limits and will be operated and staffed by the Vancouver Fire Department.

“We’re pleased to partner with Fire District 5 on the creation of this new fire station,” said Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle. “We appreciate our long-term relationship with District 5 and their generosity in providing the funding for this new facility. This project will help ensure the safety and well-being of our rapidly growing Vancouver community.”

Molina noted that the new station will improve operations and response times between fire stations 5 and 7 when complete.

“It’s great that we are able to move forward on this project with Fire District 5,” he said.
