All regional law enforcement agencies will be represented at May 17 ceremony in Vancouver
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is inviting the community to join local law enforcement agencies in attending the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.
The event takes place at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at the Clark County Public Service Center Plaza, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver.
“Across the nation, there were 129 law enforcement officers killed in line of duty in 2017,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “The memorial ceremony recognizes their sacrifice in service to the community and public safety. All regional law enforcement agencies will be represented.”
The memorial ceremony will include a rifle salute and the posting of the colors in addition to an address by Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Tony Golik. A Portland Highland Guard bagpiper will perform during the ceremony, which is expected to last about an hour.
A total of 1,511 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, representing an average of one death every 58 hours and 151 per year.
“Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, 21,541 United States law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
