April is Car Care Month, making it the perfect time for drivers to give their vehicles a seasonal check-up

Winter conditions can quietly take a toll on vehicles. Cold temperatures, potholes, and wet roads can affect important systems like tires and batteries. A little preventative maintenance now can help keep vehicles running smoothly and safely.

April is Car Care Month, making it the perfect time for drivers to give their vehicles a seasonal check-up. Here are a few simple steps drivers can take themselves this spring to keep their cars ready for spring break travel, weekend getaways, and the busy summer road-trip season ahead.

Start with a good wash
Winter driving can leave salt and de-icing chemicals on vehicles, especially for those who’ve spent time in the mountains. Over time, these materials can contribute to corrosion on suspension parts, brake lines, and the vehicle’s frame. A thorough wash, including the undercarriage and wheel wells, helps remove buildup and protect your vehicle.

Check your tires
Seasonal temperature changes can affect tire pressure, so spring is a great time to make sure tires are properly inflated. Check your door jamb, which is where you can usually find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle. Maintaining the correct pressure improves safety, boosts fuel efficiency, and extends tire life. Drivers should also check tread depth and look for uneven wear. If you used winter tires, spring is typically the time to switch back to all-season or summer tires.

Test your battery
Battery issues are among the most common reasons drivers need roadside assistance. Cold weather can put added strain on a vehicle’s battery, so spring is a smart time to have it tested, especially if it’s more than three years old. Many auto parts stores offer free battery testing, and replacing a battery about every four years can help prevent unexpected issues. AAA Washington members enjoy a 10% discount at NAPA Auto Parts, which has dozens of locations across the state and offers auto replacement parts like batteries, accessories, and more.

Refresh wipers and fluids
Spring in Washington often means rain and pollen, so drivers should check their windshield wipers and replace them if they streak or squeak. Changing wiper blades twice a year, once in spring and again in fall, is a good rule of thumb, especially in our neck of the woods.

Drivers should also check essential fluids like engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. These quick checks can make a big difference in how well a vehicle performs.

Replace important air filters
Two filters in your vehicle deserve attention during spring maintenance: the engine air filter and the cabin air filter. The engine air filter helps protect the engine from debris, while the cabin air filter improves air quality inside the vehicle, which is especially helpful during allergy season.

During April’s Car Care Month, AAA Washington members can make a free appointment to get a car inspection at AAA Approved Auto Repair shops, which can be found using the online locator tool. These shops can help identify maintenance needs and keep your vehicle ready for travel at no charge to members.

Car Care Month is a great reminder that a little preparation goes a long way. With a few simple maintenance steps, drivers can head into spring confident their vehicle is ready for wherever the road leads.
