Shelley Leatherwood was booked into the Clark County Jail and charged with Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes
VANCOUVER – On Tuesday (Jan. 3), Vancouver Police were contacted by a staff member at the Evergreen School District after a 17-year-old student had reported that a teacher had engaged in a text conversation that was of a sexual nature and had also sent the student a nude photo.
On Thursday (Jan. 5), detectives from the Vancouver Police Department Digital Evidence Cybercrime Unit arrested Shelley R. Leatherwood for Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes (Felony). Leatherwood was booked into the Clark County Jail.
Leatherwood’s booking charge indicates a previous conviction; this is due to technical requirements with the jail booking software to trigger the felony level of the crime due to Leatherwood’s position of authority at the time the crime was committed.
Vancouver Police are continuing the investigation and are asking any victims who may not have come forward to contact Detective Robert Givens at Robert.givens@cityofvancouver.us or Sergeant Julie Ballou at Julie.ballou@cityofvancouver.us.
In an email sent Thursday to Mountain View High School families, Principal Charles Anthony acknowledged Leatherwood’s arrest. He said when school officials learned of the report Tuesday they placed Leatherwood on leave and contacted the Vancouver Police Department. The letter also stated that the Evergreen School District cooperated fully with the investigation.
