Fort Vancouver bolstering the ranks as season progresses

Fort Vancouver Trappers

Trappers hope to have more players eligible for Week 2 matchup with The Dalles (Ore.)

Week 1: King’s Way Christian 56, Fort Vancouver 0
Week 2: The Dalles (Ore.) vs. Fort Vancouver at Kiggins Bowl, 5 p.m. Friday

The Trappers know it will get better. For one, there will be more eligible players in the coming weeks. Two, they will have a better understanding of new coach Steve Broussard’s system. It will get better.

This was the only game of the night Thursday, the first game of the season for Clark County teams, and ClarkCountyToday.com was there. Click here to read more about the game: https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/2017/09/01/kings-way-christian-first-to-get-a-win-in-2017/

Some highlights: Ezekiel Block had some nice moments from his defensive line position. And on offense, Shawn Mintah had 66 yards receiving, including a 52-yard reception. If the Trappers get him the ball in space, look out. He can make something happen.

Help is on the way: Football players need 12 practices in order to be eligible to play in a game. A number of Trappers came out for football a few days after practice started and had not got in the required number of practices. Broussard said he expects six or seven more eligible athletes in Week 2, plus another three or four for Week 3.

Indoor practice: All Clark County teams were forced indoors early this week due to the smoke and ash from wildfires in the region. Coach Steve Broussard said that was not necessarily a bad thing for his squad.

“We could focus on the small stuff, the fundamentals,” he said.

Coach speak:

What did Steve Broussard learn about his team in Week 1? “The kids got a little resiliency in them. I didn’t see them quitting. That was the No. 1 thing I’ve seen.”

Coach’s pick for MVP of the offense: Rickie Williams. The running back did not have a lot of yards but he ran hard all game, never backing down from the challenge.

Coach’s pick for MVP of the defense: Nehemiah Polk-Rasheed. He had 12 tackles, including one touchdown-saving tackle when he came from 20+ yards away from the play and ran down the King’s Way Christian ball carrier.

Thoughts on Week 2: “Hopefully we’ll get to play it,” the coach said, referring to the game against The Dalles, Ore. “They run well. It will be a big test for us. See how we bounce back.”
