Camas football reached state quarterfinals in Hathaway’s “interim” season, and softball is coming to Seton Catholic
The pandemic had pushed the 2020 fall football season to an abbreviated season that took place in early 2021.
The timing of football was just off.
So when Jon Eagle resigned as head coach of Camas in June, the school had to act quickly in order to get the right person in charge as the program prepared for the traditional fall season in 2021.
The school said Jack Hathaway was their guy for that season, on an interim basis.
Turns out, the school got the right guy right away after all.
On Wednesday, via social media, the school announced that Hathaway had agreed to stay with Camas after it was made clear that Camas wanted Hathaway.
No more interim status. Hathaway is the head coach of Camas football.
“So proud of the job Coach Hathaway did this season leading Papermaker football, and even more excited about our conversation this morning and his acceptance of continuing to lead Camas HS football,” the school wrote on a Twitter post. “Thank you for choosing us, Papermaker Head Football Coach Jack Hathaway!”
Several people reacted to the tweet, including Eagle.
“Great decision,” he wrote, adding, “Keep ‘em rollin’!”
Camas played one of the toughest schedules in the Northwest this season, opening with four Class 6A Oregon squads. Of those four teams, three are playing this week, in the Oregon state semifinals.
After four close losses, the Papermakers found a winning formula. They won their last five in the regular season, including a victory over Class 2A power Tumwater as well as victories over Skyview and Union to win the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.
From there, Camas won two postseason games to reach the state quarterfinals.
Seton Catholic softball coming in 2022
Seton Catholic High School is bringing softball to its athletic department and has announced the hiring of a coach who has experience in a number of sports.
Korey Kier, who has been the associate head baseball coach at Columbia River as well as an assistant coach with the Rapids’ football team, is now the head coach of the new fastpitch softball team at Seton Catholic, which will take to the field for the first time in the 2022 spring sports season.
Kier was the head baseball coach at LaSalle and Sunset in Oregon as well as the head coach at Columbia River earlier in his 22-year coaching career. From 2010 to 2013, he was the pitching coach for Mount Hood Community College baseball.
In 2014, he returned to Columbia River for baseball and football.
Now, Kier heads to softball.
