Four of the six teams from Clark County (and Woodland) survived their elimination games Wednesday in the round-of-12 matchups in their state tournaments.
And a couple of teams are playing very early Thursday to open the quarterfinals.
It’s the final week of high school basketball in Washington, with the Class 4A and 3A boys and girls tournaments being held in the Tacoma Dome, and the 2A and 1A boys and girls tournaments in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Wednesday’s local winners: The defending state champions from Camas advanced in the 4A girls tournament. The Columbia River boys and the Columbia River girls made it to the quarterfinals in Class 2A. Seton Catholic did the same in the 1A boys bracket.
In a stunner. No. 5 Union lost to No. 13 Glacier Peak in the 4A girls tournament. The season came to an end for the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League champions.
And late Wednesday night, Woodland lost in overtime in the 2A girls tournament.
All of Wednesday’s winners play again Thursday in the quarterfinals.
So do the Camas boys (4A) and Seton Catholic girls (1A), who had already clinched spots in the elite eight and did not need to play on Wednesday. The Camas boys are taking on Glacier Peak at 9 a.m. Thursday. The Seton Catholic girls play Annie Wright at 12:15 p.m. Thursday.
Here is a roundup of Wednesday’s games:
Class 4A girls
Camas 70, Lake Stevens 52: One of the best pure point guards in the Northwest shined in the Tacoma Dome as Keirra Thompson recorded 19 points, 11 assists, and three steals, leading the defending state champions to the win in the round-of-12.
Sophie Buzzard added 12 points and Lauren Hood scored 10.
Camas jumped out to a 12-point lead at the half. The lead was still double digits after three quarters. Lake Stevens, though, had a mini run to get within five. The Papermakers hit some clutch 3-pointers down the stretch and pulled away for the victory.
The Papermakers will face Sumner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the elite eight.
Glacier Peak 60, Union 49: The 13-seed Grizzlies are headed to the elite eight after shooting 50 percent from the floor and stunning No. 5 Union in the Tacoma Dome.
Union trailed for much of the game, rallied to within a point in the second half, but the Grizzlies regained their momentum to pull away in the closing minutes.
Samantha Thoma scored 19 points for GP, and Brynna Pukis made four 3-pointers.
Union senior Janessa Chatman made four 3-pointers and led the Titans with 18 points in her final high school game. Brooklyn Haywood was held to 11 points.
Class 2A boys
Columbia River 60, Lakewood 56: The 11-seed Rapids advanced to the elite eight with a win over the 6-seed in Yakima.
Ari Richardson scored 22 points to lead Columbia River, but he would have been a difference-maker even if he hadn’t scored. He had seven of his team’s 15 steals, as Columbia River forced 20 turnovers.
The Rapids jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter. Lakewood made it a one-point game at the half. From there, it remained close, but River made enough plays down the stretch to advance. Aaron Hoey added 18 points for the Rapids.
Columbia River is playing No. 5 Selah at 9 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Interestingly, with River’s victory on Wednesday, as well as Mark Morris’ win, three teams from the 2A GSHL are in the elite eight. R.A. Long had already qualified for the quarters.
Class 2A girls
Columbia River 38, Port Angeles 33: In a defensive battle, Columbia River’s defense was just that much better as the 7-seed Rapids advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over the No. 10 team in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Marley Myers had 11 points and six rebounds, and Gracie Glavin added 10 points for the Rapids.
Columbia River forced Port Angeles into 21 turnovers.
The Rapids had a 12-point lead early in the second half. Port Angeles rallied to make it a one-point game going into the third quarter. The River defense held Port Angeles to six points in the final eight minutes.
Columbia River will play No. 1 Lynden at 5:30 p.m.
Bainbridge 44, Woodland 40, OT: Woodland’s season came to an end with an overtime loss in the final game of the night in the 2A girls tournament.
Bainbridge erased a five-point deficit going into the fourth quarter. Woodland just missed on a final shot before the regulation buzzer.
Bainbridge, the 8-seed, got the job done in overtime, ending No. 9 Woodland’s season.
Class 1A boys
Seton Catholic 68, Cashmere 61: Kaiden Wilson came up with a monster game to save Seton Catholic’s season, with 32 points and 15 rebounds.
Impressive numbers, right?
More impressive? Seton Catholic trailed by 17 points in the third quarter. Then it was all Cougars.
Seton Catholic got the deficit down to seven points by the end of the third quarter, then crushed Cashmere 21-7 in the final quarter for the seven-point win to advance to the quarterfinals. At one point, Seton Catholic, the 6-seed, had a 20-1 run to overtake the 11-seed.
Rico George added 17 points for the Cougars.
Seton Catholic will play No. 4 Zillah at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
