Ryan Josephson led Camas to state tournament the past two seasons; Brian Witherspoon takes over the program
The Camas boys basketball team is going through a major transition as the basketball season begins.
Ryan Josephson, who has been the head coach for the past seven seasons, resigned Friday, roughly 72 hours before the first practice.
Brian Witherspoon, who was the junior varsity coach with the Papermakers and a former head coach at Evergreen High School, has been named the interim coach for this season.
“We have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Josephson and support his decision to step away,” said Stephen Baranowski, Camas’ athletic director, in a letter to basketball parents.
Baranowski explained that Josephson’s decision was based on personal reasons.
“We are thankful for the dedication and years he gave to the program, making it one of the top programs in the state,” the AD added.
Camas reached the state’s round-of-12 in the Tacoma Dome last year and placed sixth in state after reaching the quarterfinals in 2022.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2024-25 basketball season opened Monday with official practices across the state.
“Coach Witherspoon’s varsity experience, familiarity with the current players, schemes, and systems, as well as his steady approach made him the ideal fit for this role,” Baranowski said.
Witherspoon will be supported by varsity assistant coaches Derek Nesland and Jason Harris.
“While unexpected, we are fortunate to have such an experienced and prepared staff that can step in and fill these roles,” Baranowski said.
