Music For Mutts Concert to benefit Humane Society for Southwest Washington

The hour-long concert includes solo, duet and trio pieces starting with Renaissance-era music

VANCOUVER — Music may soothe the savage beast, but it’s also highly appreciated by civilized dogs, cats and people. That’s why Shannon Boyd, Training Coordinator at Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) decided to stage a Walk/Run for the Animals’ fundraising cello concert on Sat., April 27 at 7 p.m. in the HSSW adoptions lobby.

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) will stage a Walk/Run for the Animals’ fundraising cello concert on Sat., April 27 at 7 p.m. in the HSSW adoptions lobby in Vancouver.Boyd will play cello and recorder along with two other cellists, Annie Harkey-Power from the Vancouver Symphony, and Aiden Goodman.

“We’ll perform right next to HSSW’s Cattery, and it will be interesting to see what the cats have to say about it,” Boyd laughs. “I’d love to have an ensemble with the dogs. Even though they are housed in the back, dogs have great hearing and they may start singing with us.”

The hour-long concert includes solo, duet and trio pieces starting with Renaissance-era music and progressing to contemporary arrangements.

The free concert is open to the public. Boyd and her fellow musicians are requesting a recommended donation of $10. All the funds will go to the Walk/Run for the Animals’ community fundraiser for shelter dogs and cats.

“This is such a fabulous way to include HSSW and the animals in fundraising efforts for Walk/Run for the Animals,” says Stacey Graham, president of HSSW. “The on-site concert offers people a musical treat and connects them with our mission to provide shelter, medical care, food and playtime for the dogs and cats here.”

Boyd has a long history of raising funds during Walk/Run for the Animals’ season. “Every year, I do something unusual to raise money. One year I shaved my head, and one year I sat in a kennel all day waiting to raise enough money to be ‘released,’” says Boyd. “This year I chose something musical. The concert will help raise money for shelter animals and get people excited about the big event on May 4.”
