Several farms opening soon for family fun tradition
It appears that the weather has delayed the traditional opening of blueberry season in the region, but farms are opening this week for folks looking to pick the delicious fruits.
Local farms have been opening their fields for decades, inviting the public to enjoy the fruits to make smoothies, desserts, yogurt, ice cream, and more.
For tips on making the most of a picking outing, check the website or social media for each farm, or call ahead to confirm opening hours. Also, it is a good idea to check payment options. Some farms accept cash or check only and have no digital payment services.
On hot days, get to the fields early. Wear a hat to protect from the sun.
Here are just some of the farms opening in the coming weeks. (Farms not on this list are encouraged to add them to the comments.)
• Meadowglenn Farm (6150 NE 232nd Ave. in Vancouver) is opening Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be open again on Saturday. Meadowglenn is closed on Sundays.
• Majestic Farms Blueberries (18500 NE 182nd Ave. in Brush Prairie) has a Saturday opening day. The picking time is 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Majestic is open for picking Wednesdays through Sundays during the season.
Many other farms are expected to open soon.
• Grandma Dixies Blueberries (17719 NE 182nd Ave. in Brush Prairie) is opening July 12 … tentatively. Pickers are asked to call first to make sure it is open. The number is 360-892-9549.
• Davenport Blueberries (37614 NE 137th Ct. in La Center) is expected to open July 15. Call 206-947-9262 for hours.
• Valley View Blueberries (21717 NE 68th St. in Vancouver) is hoping for a mid July opening for U-pick and pre-picked berries.
• Indigo Acres Blueberry Farm (5406 NE 219th St. in Battle Ground) hopes to open the second full week of July.
• Bountiful Acres (4008 NE Cedar Creek Rd in Woodland) expects a mid-July opening.
• Prairie Berry Farm (17509 NE 182nd Ave. in Brush Prairie) is described “opening soon.”
Meanwhile, the Conway Family Farm (32116 NE Dial Rd. in Camas) is awaiting berries to ripen. Picking there is by appointment only.
