
This is a career ‘swan song’ of sorts for Greg McKelvey, who is hanging up his baton this summer after 28 years and hundreds of accolades
Longtime Battle Ground High School band director Greg McKelvey has been named grand marshal of the upcoming Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade taking place Saturday, June 8.
To recognize this honor, Battle Ground High School held a short ceremony Wednesday (May 29) morning.
This is a career “swan song” of sorts for McKelvey, who is hanging up his baton this summer after 28 years and hundreds of accolades. Under his leadership, the BGHS Advanced Jazz Band has earned numerous first-place finishes at state and regional competitions. The band also earned a first place finish at the 2023 Basically Basie Jazz Heritage Competition in Kansas City.
In addition to his work at the high school, McKelvey has overseen the middle school band programs at Chief Umtuch and Tukes Valley, as well as acting as a mentor for the high school’s Black Student Union.
