For 250 years you have stood as a beacon of liberty and tonight on the eve of your big birthday I celebrate every single one of those years with a full heart. I love your freedoms and I always have.
I have staunchly supported our Constitution and constitutional rights my entire adult life. I have always advocated for the right to celebrate America with pomp and circumstance including the joyful tradition of fireworks that bring families together under those star spangled skies.
You are not perfect but you are the greatest experiment in human liberty the world has ever known. Lady Liberty still lifts her torch high, a timeless reminder of the hope and opportunity you offer the world. From the courageous words of the Declaration in 1776 to this fifth generation Washingtonian writing from Camas in 2026 you call every generation to rise, reach and defend We the People.
Two hundred fifty years ago America wasn’t built by celebrities. It was built by ordinary people. Farmers at town meetings. Shopkeepers debating taxes. Parents worried about their children’s future. Neighbors who showed up. The American experiment survived because everyday citizens accepted the responsibility that comes with freedom. That responsibility hasn’t disappeared. It has simply moved closer to home right here in our city halls, county courthouses, school boards and Olympia.
That’s why I work hard in Clark County to help more Washingtonians understand the decisions made in their name, ask better questions and hold government accountable.
I’ve seen your promise in the faces of my four children and in the everyday citizens who testify, submit comments, contact lawmakers and organize in their communities. Those actions are exactly how self government works.
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country isn’t political. It’s our identity and we should be proud. Look at the tourists celebrating the FIFA World Cup and all the love they share for America. We should not only be proud but be active in how our communities are shaped.
On this Independence Day 2026 the best way to honor our founders is by following their example. Know who represents you. Show up. Speak up. Participate. Take 10 minutes this week to look up your Clark County Council members, your state legislators and your local school board. Attend one meeting or send one email holding them accountable on taxes, public safety or education. The American experiment depends on ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things.
I am forever grateful and forever yours.
