Crews from the Vancouver Fire Department responded to a fire Tuesday afternoon at the former Red Lion at the Quay.
Just before 2:30 p.m. this afternoon (Feb. 22), Vancouver firefighters responded to a fire on the roof of the former Red Lion at 100 Columbia Street along Vancouver’s Columbia River waterfront.
Over 30 firefighters responded to the blaze along with several fire engines from Clark County Fire District 6. A plume of smoke could be seen from miles away and first arriving fire crews reported seeing a significant amount of dark smoke coming from the roof around the historic Red Lion Hotel sign.
Construction workers told first responders that an 8-foot by 10-foot shed caught fire that housed the old water softening system for the hotel. All of the construction personnel were able to escape without injuries.
Vancouver firefighters extended their 100-foot aerial ladder from their tiller driven ladder truck and extinguished the fire by operating a master stream which delivers about 800 GPM.
“This was a difficult fire due to the high east winds,’’ read a statement from the Vancouver Fire Department.
The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office.
