Camas School Board narrows search for new superintendent

Two candidates are named as finalists in the search for the new leader of Camas schools; one candidate withdraws from the process

After a special board meeting Tuesday (Dec. 7) night, the Camas School Board has narrowed the candidate list for the superintendent position to two finalists: Dr. John Anzalone from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Michelle Kuss-Cybula from Cle Elum, Washington.

Two candidates are named as finalists in the search for the new leader of Camas schools; one candidate withdraws from the process.

The decision followed the review of all feedback from staff, students, parents, and community members who participated in two rigorous days of interviews and activities last week as well as hundreds of survey responses tied to recorded interviews shared with the public on December 1.

Today, the two candidates were informed they were finalists. Kuss-Cybula withdrew her application, indicating that it was in the best interest of her community to remain in her current position.

“This was a challenging decision as all four candidates have distinguished backgrounds and experiences in stepping into the role of Superintendent,” said Board President Tracey Malone. “We felt both John and Michelle had the potential to be the best fit and leader for Camas.”

Moving forward, the Board is arranging for a site visit to Anzalone’s district early next week to solidify their decision. Then, pending the outcome of the visit, they hope to begin contract negotiations.

Anzalone was named as an assistant superintendent for Clark County School District in 2021, and he has 16 years of experience in school administration at both middle- and high-school levels in his current system. He holds a doctorate from Walden University and a master’s from the University of Phoenix.

“Thank you to our community partners, students, and families that provided feedback,” Malone commented. “The participation and input have contributed in generating highly qualified candidates who embody the experience, leadership, and vision that will support and lead our students and district.”
