Vancouver Volcanoes look to pick up first win of season

Fans can watch on cable TV or subscribe to a streaming service

The Vancouver Volcanoes are back home for two games this weekend, in search of their first victory of The Basketball League season.

No fans allowed for home games this season, but the Volcanoes, a professional basketball team based in Vancouver, has two games this weekend

Vancouver will face the Bakersfield Magic at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the O’Connell Sports Center on the campus of Clark College. The Volcanoes return to the court at 3 p.m. Sunday against the Salem Capitals

Even though they are playing at home, Volcanoes fans are still not going to be able to see their team in person.

Curtis Hill, the team’s market owner, said last month that the uncertainty of the pandemic led the franchise to opt out of having fans this season.

“We want consistency throughout the whole year,” Hill said. “We don’t want to start with fans and be told no fans. So we’re just going to go with no fans all year. We don’t want anybody getting sick.”

He noted that there have been multiple times throughout the pandemic when experts thought the worst was behind us, only to change protocols again.

Fans can still watch every Volcanoes game on Comcast Cable Ch 23 or 323HD. For those who do not have Comcast, all The Basketball League games are streamed, at a cost, on TBL TV. For more information on the subscription-based broadcast, go to: https://tbltv.tv/

Vancouver has started the season 0-4. The Volcanoes have lost their last two games by seven, and eight points. Hill said they are getting close.

Andrew McCowan is leading the Volcanoes in scoring at 22.3 points per game. Markus Golder is scoring more than 17 points a game.

Hill said he expects to add more talent to the roster in the coming weeks.

The Volcanoes, who are returning to Vancouver this season after the franchise was part of the International Basketball League through 2014, are still looking to partner with local sponsors, Hill added.
