Scott Campbell’s Christmas Promise remains with build-a-bike event

Volunteers showed up at Taylor Transport to build bicycles for children in the 11th year of the event presented by Waste Connections

Volunteers showed up to help out the volunteers, all in an effort to keep Scott Campbell’s Christmas Promise.

The annual Build a Bike took place at Taylor Transport in Vancouver on Saturday. Volunteers showed up to pick up bicycles in order to assemble at home or use the nearby workshop to build the bikes right there.

In all, more than 500 bikes were to be built this year, and those bicycles will be given to area non-profit organizations to be delivered in time for Christmas.

The annual get-together is powered by Waste Connections. The late Scott Campbell, who was a community leader and employee at Waste Connections, came up with the idea years ago.

Waste Connections has the goal of keeping the promise alive.

Last year, because of the pandemic, bike-builders could only pick up the bikes and bring them home to assemble. This year, it was a hybrid of sorts. Folks could do that or build the bikes on site, at “Santa’s workshop.”

There was also a DJ providing holiday music, plus coffee, breakfast items, and other snacks.

Santa Claus, The Grinch, a Yeti (or was that a Wampa from the planet Hoth?), and Buddy the Elf also showed up to say hello in this, the 11th year of the bike build.

The children who will receive the bicycles will also get a helmet.
