Ms. Mittelman strikes the appropriate chord here. Most folks want to help those struggling in life…in years past it was our churches, synagogues and other charitable organizations that offered a helping hand.

Somewhere, Government decided it wanted to be the end all, be all, go-to entity to offer assistance and began limiting deductibility of charitable contributions to these organizations…making Government the 800 pound gorilla in charge.

As Ms. Mittelman so eloquently writes, compassion without someone checking the books, leads to the fraud which has been exposed in California, Minnesota and now here in Washington and in many other areas of America.

People want to help…but they also want their hard-earned tax dollars to count and not be wasted by Government not “minding the till”.

After the 1871 Chicago fire, burned out residents went to their houses of worship to get assistance. Someone would actually visit the residence of the victim to assure they were destitute and deserving of the assistance…it’s called accountability.

It is an unfortunate truth that we are populated with scalawags who would plead poverty in order to let someone else pay when they were fully capable of doing so.

Until Government gives the taxpayers a DETAILED accounting (accountability) of where the money goes, there will be little trust that Government is watching out for our precious tax dollars…why should they…it’s only someone else’s money!
