In reply to John Ley. The City council wants Light rail- no matter what. They'll try to make driving so miserable folks will resort to rail. They won't commute so they don't care about folks who need to get to work or other needs. There's that old no light rail without a vote resolution, but the City won't put it on their agenda so it won't be brought up. Humbug!

This bridge shall be known as the “BOONDOGGLE” bridge. C-Tran, (already paid for) across the bridges carry’s less then a 1000 passengers a day, lets add light rail at now $3.5 billion, that VOTERS have said they don’t want. Since there is lots of congestion across the bridges, lets replace the old 3 lane bridge with a new 3 lane bridge for a bunch of $$$ dollars, that will help with traffic congestion.
This started as the CRC over 10 years ago, today, with the same “Engineers, politicians” now the IBR! 10 years from now the project will be called ???!
We tax payers are being fleeced.

Everyone I have spoken to is completely against this choo-choo train connecting to Vancouver. Leave the bankrupt Trimet trains out of the bridge. You won’t have much writer ship anyway we all know that the estimated cost that they mentioned will probably double by the time they get ready to complete the project which they say will be for another 5 to 7 years but we all know it’ll probably take 15. And yes, a big majority of those folks will bypass it and use I205.

People ramming this scam down our throats are insane. It is not PHYSICALLY possible for that kind of ridership, AND they’re not only lying about the project’s ridership they’re ALSO lying about the costs.

In Seattle, the $53 billion dollar expansion they stupidly voted for now is scheduled to cost in the area of $90 billion, and they plan on paying for it with a 1 property tax increase that they’re NOT going to ask for.

See, they don’t care that it will cost at least twice as much as they claim. None of them are ever held accountable for their lies, so why NOT lie?

As it is now, people sit on the bridge and on the freeway for nothing.

After these billions are wasted, they’ll STILL be sitting there, only this time it will cost them ever-increasing, life-time tolls.

To move people just like buses do now.

I agree with all the comments that are very concerned about any tolls. Light rail is the future maybe, 50 yrs from now. Build another bridge next to the current bridge. Save the current bridge for the rail people to develope themselves someday. Just build another damn bridge and move on. No rail. No tolls. Build a new bridge for 1-2 Billion. Break down those costs so we can see where those costs are. 14.4 billion is BS. Breakdown those costs so the public can evaluate.

Going unnoticed there is a “traffic bottle neck” at that choke point. Adding the same number of lanes will not help this bottle neck. $3.5 billion to replace paid for buses, makes NO Sense? A new way to cross the Columbia and I’ve seen several proposals from tunnels to a bridge in a different location. Before a decision is made on the BONDOGGLE BRIDGE, burning up my tax dollars, rethink IBR (alias CRC, in ten years ???).

Robert — good point, comparing the TOLL cost (allegedly $9.40 maximum) to the cost of a MAX light rail ticket.

TriMet shows the MAX light rail ticket is $2.80 to go downtown. That would be $5.60 for a round trip.

So “yes” riding MAX will cost less than driving and paying the toll. But the MAX Yellow Line only travels 14 mph. How many people want to travel that slow?

My guess is that the tolls will have to be higher, especially when the IBR “hopes” to create a low income toll program. That will have several affects, including raising the maximum cost for everyone else NOT getting the discount.

But then those getting the discounted tolls will stay in their car instead of riding the light rail, since the cost is very similar.

In reply to Jim Karlock. Toll rates have been discussed pre-construction, & are planned to increase annually. The worst part is that $3.5plus for light rail alone, which is not justified based on historical transit crossing data and current trend. And Clark County voters have repeatedly REJECTED light rail. Costs could be MUCH MUCH higher per history of OR Trimet and Seattle area Sound Transit. Best to use buses and vans instead of uber-expensive and dangerous MAX Light rail. Costs will be much lower for vehicle traffic lanes that can share with other vehicles, emergency vehicles, freight etc as needed.

Wow! so tolling could cost as much as $9.40 for a round trip over the bridge. Who voted for that?I wonder what the fare on bus or light rail will be. I’ll bet it won’t be near that as all rides are subsidized.
