Work to add left-turn lanes along SR 503 north of Battle Ground begins Monday

Drivers should plan for lane shifts, flaggers at NE 299th Street/NE McBride Road through Thu., Oct. 1

BATTLE GROUND – To help improve safety and reduce crashes, travelers who turn left on Northeast 299th Street/Northeast McBride Road from State Route 503 (Lewisville Highway) north of Battle Ground will soon have designated turn lanes.

Beginning Monday (Sept. 28), Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will begin work to add exclusive left-turn only lanes for both directions of SR 503 where travelers can wait for traffic to clear before turning.

“Steady residential growth north of Battle Ground, as well as a consistent recreational demand on weekends has led to increased traffic on this corridor,” said Southwest Region Traffic Engineer Rick Keniston. “With about 12,000 vehicles using this stretch of highway daily, we’ve seen more crashes at this county road intersection.”

Left turn lanes help eliminate the conflict between high-speed traffic, traveling at 55 mph in this area, and vehicles slowing to turn. They also help reduce rear-end and side impact crashes and promote lower speeds through the intersection with narrower lane widths.

This low-cost safety improvement uses the existing pavement width to maximize safety-funding resources while improving safety and mobility.

The total cost for this project is estimated at $70,000.

Work schedule:

  • Mon., Sept. 28: Travelers on northbound SR 503 will encounter intermittent lane shifts from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Travelers on southbound SR 503 will be detoured to use the north end intersection of Northeast McBride Road to enter and exit SR 503.
  • Tue.. Sept. 29: Travelers on southbound SR 503 will encounter flaggers at the intersection of Northeast McBride Road/Northeast 299th Street with delays of up to 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Wed.. Sept. 30 and Thursday, Oct. 1: Travelers on both direction of SR 503 will encounter flaggers at the intersection of Northeast McBride Road/Northeast 299th Street with delays of up to 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m

The work is weather dependent.
