Portland man identified as pedestrian killed crossing State Route 14

VANCOUVER — A pedestrian who was struck and killed while attempting to cross State Route 14 in Vancouver last week has been identified as a 64-year-old Portland man, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Washington State PatrolNils C. Legernes died at the scene after being hit by a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a 49-year-old Vancouver man who also had an 18-year-old male passenger in the vehicle.

The incident occurred in the eastbound lanes of State Route 14 at mile marker 1.5 at about 9:10 p.m. May 10. Legernes, walking north, was struck in lane two.

The driver of the vehicle was found not to be at fault and will face no charges or citations. He and his passenger were not injured.

The official cause is listed by the state patrol as a pedestrian in the roadway. A press memo from the state patrol indicated it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the man’s decision to cross the roadway.
