PeaceHealth Southwest wants you to ‘Take Your Brain Out to Play’

Free day of fun scheduled for May 5 aims to provide entertainment, support for those who have suffered strokes and brain injuries, and the whole community is invited

VANCOUVER — PeaceHealth Southwest is offering a free day of fun and engagement for those who have suffered from a stroke or brain injury, the caregivers who support them and any community members looking for an interesting local outing.

On Sat., May 5, the third annual Take Your Brain Out to Play event will be held at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center’s Health Education Center. Organizers describe the opportunity as a “fun (and free) day filled with interesting activities to stimulate your brain.”

“The event is designed to get people to engage in new, interesting activities creating opportunities to try something they’ve never done before,” Louise Jenkins, stroke program coordinator at PeaceHealth Southwest, said in a press release. “Taking care of yourself is important, not just medically, but mentally, too. People recovering from stroke or brain injury should engage in activities that stimulate their brains. But, so should everyone else! There are tremendous benefits that come from learning a new skill or making a new social connection.”

The list of activities for attendees will include Tai Chi, container gardening, an art station, jewelry making, scrapbooking, rock painting and music from “The Backstrokes.”

Additionally, relaxation coach and massage therapist Jacki Gethner will provide a workshop on techniques for self-caring, and representatives of local support agencies will give attendees information on resources.

Take Your Brain Out to Play begins at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to last through 2 p.m. at the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center – Health Education Center, located at 600 NE 92nd Ave., Vancouver.
