Downtown Camas Association seeking helping hands for annual spring cleanup and planting day

Volunteers of all ages sought for April 22 event in downtown Camas

They call it a “grass roots effort,” and for good reason.

The annual spring cleanup and planting day in downtown Camas brings the community together in grassroots fashion to work together on, well, grass roots, among other things.

From 1 to 4 p.m., Sun., April 22, community members will work as a team on the beautification effort. That means cleaning, weeding, planting flowers and more.

The Downtown Camas Association is inviting volunteers to come early at 12:30 p.m. to get fueled up for the task with a lunch of grilled burgers and hot dogs served by Journey Church volunteers.

The event coincides with Earth Day, which was started by Camas native Denis Hayes, and is a collaboration between the Downtown Camas Association, Journey Church, staff from the city of Camas, local students, volunteers and many others from the community.

The work includes sidewalk and landscape cleanup, weeding, planting flowers and other plants, spreading bark dust and more.

“This event is a true grass roots community effort,” said Carrie Schulstad, Downtown Camas Association executive director, in a press release. “Everyone comes together and in just a few short hours, our town is completely transformed! All ages pitch in. Thank you to the City of Camas for all your help, to Journey Church for providing lunch and to all the wonderful volunteers that come rain or shine to beautify the town we love.”

The work, as usual, is being done in advance of the annual Camas Plant & Garden Fair, which is scheduled for downtown Camas on Saturday, May 12.

Volunteers are asked to meet in front of Journey Church at Fourth and Birch to sign in. Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. All ages are welcome to volunteer. They’re asked to bring their own shovels, spades, buckets, wheelbarrows and garden gloves. Wheelbarrows are in especially short supply, organizers say. Garbage bags and rubber gloves will be provided for picking up litter.
