Community invited to preview vision for Battle Ground’s future

Open house set for Thu., Nov. 8

BATTLE GROUND — The Battle Ground community is invited to an open house set for Thu., Nov. 8, from 4:30–6 p.m., at the Battle Ground Community Center (912 East Main Street). To contribute to the Battle Ground Roadmap vision and action plan, participants will be asked to provide feedback on the draft vision and several “Big Ideas” projects.

The Navigators, 12 community members appointed to offer guidance and present their recommendations to City Council, have been working since June to develop a vision and prioritize projects. At the event, the Navigators will share what they have learned and invite fellow community members to weigh in.

“We are excited to share the results of the Navigators’ work. The resulting vision and action plan will guide policy and align City resources for years to come. The more community input we get at the upcoming Open House the better the plan will be,” explains Erin Erdman, Battle Ground’s acting city manager.

The six priority “Big Ideas” being considered by the Navigators are:

  • 1. Successful School System. Support the broad-based community leadership essential to a successful public school system.
  • 2. Old Town District Revitalization. Promote the ongoing revitalization of Old Town Battle Ground as the traditional heart of the community with shops, restaurants and other attractions that preserve the community’s enduring small town heritage and charm.
  • 3. Activity Centers & Gathering Places. Develop new—and expand existing—spaces that contribute to quality of life for Battle Ground’s growing population of all ages. Projects may include expanding the Community Center, developing a new YMCA/aquatics center, and creating more parks and gathering places in neighborhoods.
  • 4. Future Jobs & Industry. Identify Battle Ground’s most competitive economic opportunities and employment niches for the future, creating a comprehensive economic strategy that includes new jobs, targeted industry sectors and their locations.
  • 5. School District Site Redevelopment. Plan for the eventual re-development of the Battle Ground High School campus to accommodate a new town center for mixed use housing, employment and recreation — Battle Ground’s “living room.”
  • 6. Town Planning Districts. Establish a new system of planning districts covering the entire city, reinforcing the unique identities of Battle Ground’s various areas and establishing a framework and vision for future development.

The Battle Ground Roadmap project began earlier this year with a comprehensive analysis of the area’s demographic and economic trends, interviews with a cross-section of community stakeholders and a survey completed by more than 2,000 community members. The Roadmap vision and action plan is expected to be presented to City Council by the end of 2018.
