Vancouver’s Downtown Association proud to be part of three “spruce up” events that will add to the quality of life in the city

Vancouver is about to look a whole lot better.

Vancouver’s Downtown Association, the city of Vancouver, and the Parks Foundation of Clark County, along with more than 100 volunteers, are partnering up on Saturday to plant summer flowers at Propstra Square and “spruce up” around the downtown core through Uptown Village.

That is just one of three clean-up projects the VDA announced this week.

The VDA’s Flower Basket Program returns Friday when 110 hanging baskets will be placed in areas from the Waterfront, to the Historic Core, and in Uptown Village.

Also this month, the VDA’s Spruce The Couve Cleanup Challenge is asking downtown businesses to take on projects around their locations.

“Keeping our downtown community clean and vibrant fosters the high quality of life that we all enjoy,” said Michael Walker, executive director of Vancouver’s Downtown Association. “These beautification efforts also help to attract a higher level visitation to our small businesses.”

Saturday’s event begins at 9:30 a.m. at Esther Short Park with downtown cleanup and flower planting. The Uptown Village cleanup will begin at 11 a.m. There are 125 volunteers who have signed up, and city council members are expected to act as block captains and support staff.

(Volunteers must sign a waiver. And while the VDA said the number of volunteers is maxed out, if you still want to help out, e-mail Chelsea White of the city of Vancouver as soon as possible. She can be reached at: chelsea.white@cityofvancouver.us)

“Our work is fueled by passionate volunteers who are committed to seeing our city center thrive — their community centric nature makes Vancouver a special place to live, work, and play,” Walker said.

The Spruce The Couve Cleanup Challenge runs through May 22. Businesses will be taking on a variety of tasks, including: graffiti removal, adding planters, plants, or trees, adding bark dust to tree wells, and litter clean-up.

This is also a competition. The VDA will announce a winner on May 24, with the winning business earning a pizza party and another fun activity.
