“THE CHILDREN’S HOUR” July 7th Black Chair Project
Magenta Theater will perform a staged reading of the 1934 script The Children’s Hour – the play that transformed a quiet young woman named Lillian Hellman into one of the world’s best-known modern playwrights. The Children’s Hour is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
Saturday, July 7, 2018, 7:30pm doors open at 7pm.
Tickets: www.MagentaTickets.com/tickets $10 in advance, $12 at the door
The Children’s Hour is about a boarding school student who spreads a story of two female teachers having an abnormal attachment for one another. After the rumor gains momentum it soon turns into scandal. As the student comes to understand the power she wields, she sucks more people into her vicious vortex, causing irreparable damage.
The play has quite a history which today’s audiences may find interesting. In 1934, the mention of homosexuality on New York stages was illegal. For its debut, it had been impossible to get any of Broadway’s leading ladies to take roles because of fear the police might close the play! Controversy swirled around the entire production. Any talk of a Pulitzer Prize was stifled when the realization that Professor William Lyon Phelps of Yale (member of the Pulitzer prize committee) refused to attend the play.
These Three, the first film adaptation of the play, in 1936, deftly introduced a relationship with a man into the plotline, to avoid clashes with the Hays Code – a set of industry moral guidelines in effect at the time. When a second film version was released in 1961, rules had been relaxed sufficiently that a return to Ms. Hellman’s original plotline and play title was ‘allowed’.
The play has mature themes and offers audiences an opportunity to witness a period in time that many consider to have been oppressive and dark. We invite all audience members to read the script ahead of time to gauge for themselves if the content matter is appropriate for them.
The cast for The Children’s Hour is substantial including: Linda Michelet as Mrs. Tilford, Chris Murphy as Dr. Cardin, Erin Knittle asvMartha Dobie, Melissa Barnick as Karen Wright and Kelcey Feeney playing student Rosalie Wells.

Black Chair Project (BCP) – is a progressive and exciting branch of Magenta Theater performing staged readings of plays throughout the year. BCP utilizes the bare minimum of rehearsal time. A set consisting of black chairs and black tables in front of whatever happens to be onstage at the time, actors dressed in basic black, whatever lighting is available, and a collaboration of actors providing their own props. Rehearsals are exhilaratingly fast paced! Everyone functions as part of the machinery speeding along to produce high-quality and entertaining staged readings.
