“Once Upon a Palace Purple” The 10-year revival!
Tickets are now on sale for Magenta Theater’s final production of the 2018 season – “Once Upon a Palace Purple” written and directed by Jaynie Roberts, Musical Direction by Steve Goodwin, Vocal Direction & Choreography by Kristi L. Foster.

So what’s this script all about?
There are two kingdoms. The Purple Kingdom, and the Red Kingdom. The Purples are the good guys; the Reds are the bad guys. Both Matriarchs are determined to wed their daughters off to eligible princes in order to garner the most media attention and fortify their armies. Meanwhile, the Patriarchs of each Kingdom are either working on inventions or admiring their reflections. (!) The two matriarchs are sisters; sisters who have never gotten along, and are complete polar opposites! And did we mention that the Reds are all beautiful, talented and amazing? While the Purples are all unfortunate and untalented? (But they have great personalities!) Mingle these two Kingdoms; add in a Fairy Godmother, a Grandmother Clock and some genuinely bad, bad guys and you have the recipe for an evening of magic, laughter, fantasy and escape from the reality of everyday life.

In 2008, Magenta Theater debuted the original script, “Once Upon a Palace Purple” at a church on Main Street, across from the Dairy Queen (now the DQ). 1,082 people came to see it and it was, at the time, the second best-selling production Magenta had performed. (Beaten only by the company’s first presentation of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” in 2007.)

For years, audiences and original cast members badgered playwright and director, Jaynie Roberts, to ‘do the play again….please!’ but were always met with a shake of the head by Roberts. Then in 2017 when Artistic Director, Jaynie Roberts, (yes, the same person) was pondering which play should close out the 16th season…it occurred to her that it might be fun to revive the Palace script. While a few naysayers thought the company had ‘moved beyond her writing abilities,’ the majority of the people who got wind of the idea were enthusiastic and excited about the re-do!

The re-write began with a group reading including many of the original actors coming together in December 2017 to offer suggestions, and so playwright Roberts could ‘hear it again’ with fresh ears. The group reading produced a myriad of wonderful ideas and the re-write was launched. (Side note: A lot of the rewriting took place on the Southbank of the River Thames, London, UK during April 2018. There is photographic evidence for this!)

Two major coups were accomplished during the planning stages. First, the contracting of Steve Goodwin, who would take the original midi-tracks and convert them into ‘real music’ that musicians could play; as well as direct the band. (Steve is a member of the company’s improv troupe, and recently starred as Dr. Watson in “Baskerville.”) Second, the recruitment of Kristi Foster for vocal direction and choreography. Having served as the Executive Artistic Director for the largest musical theater youth program in the Portland metro area, Kristi directed over 35 productions, coached dozens of other artistic team members and served in each artistic capacity of a team. She brings her love of musical theater, and her 25 years of teaching experience to this production. WOW….not bad!

“We must make our lives interesting by eating newly invented dishes everyday, because a varied diet makes us more appealing.” Queen Violet.
