Magenta Theater’s January 18th

Black Chair Project: “THE CEMETERY CLUB” by Ivan Menchell. Magenta Theater’s January 18th  A Staged Reading Directed by Jaynie Roberts.

THE FIRST BLACK CHAIR PROJECT OF 2020!  Magenta Theaters 2019 schedule was so busy that it was almost impossible to schedule these one-performance-only staged reading events.  BUT, after looking carefully at the season calendar, it was decided to cut back on rentals to outside groups in order to accommodate the theater’s programs!  So….2020 will see the return of more Black Chair Projects.  One performance only: 7:30pm Saturday January 18th, 2020. Tickets $12 in advance, $15 at the door as available.  Magenta Theater, 1108 Main Street, Vancouver, WA – in the Arts District.

“The Cemetery Club” was featured in the 2013 season as a mainstage production at the theater’s former location.  K.C. Cooper played the memorable role of Mildred, but will be playing the role of Lucille in this reprisal. In addition, Tony Provenzola, will be reprising his role of Sam.  It’s strongly suspected that other male actors in the company avoided auditioning for this role when they heard of Tony’s intent to try out, as they probably felt he was a proverbial shoe-in!  Audiences will be delighted to see the other characters are portrayed by some of Magenta’s finest female actors.

What’s it about?  Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husband’s graves.  Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life.  Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girls who just want to have fun and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene.  He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave.  Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida.  They are guilt stricken when this nearly break’s Ida’s heart.

Black Chair Project (BCP) – is a progressive and exciting branch of Magenta Theater performing staged readings of plays throughout the year.  BCP utilizes the bare minimum of rehearsal time.  A set consisting of black chairs and black tables in front of whatever happens to be onstage at the time, actors dressed in basic costumes, whatever lighting is available, and a collaboration of actors providing their own props and sound effects.  Rehearsals are exhilaratingly fast paced!  Everyone functions as part of the machinery speeding along to produce high-quality and entertaining staged readings.

“The Cemetery Club” is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
